Summary
The longest of the 18 Parvas, the Aranyaka Parva narrates the Pandavas' 12-year exile in the wilderness. During this period, they encounter divine sages, acquire celestial weapons, and hear stories within stories — including the famous tales of Nala and Damayanti, Savitri and Satyavan, and Rama's exile. Arjuna travels to heaven to obtain divine weapons from Indra. The Pandavas grow in wisdom, strength, and resolve during their exile, preparing for the challenges ahead....

Vaiśampāyana said: O king! The mahāratha-s then went from one forest to another, killing many animals and travelling fast,
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! तब मराठा एक जंगल से दूसरे जंगल में चले गए, कई जानवरों को मार डाला और तेजी से यात्रा की,
through the lands of Matysa, Trigarta, Pāñcāla and Kīcaka, where they saw many beautiful woods and lakes.
मत्यसा, त्रिगर्त, पंचाल और कीकाका की भूमि से होते हुए, जहां उन्होंने कई खूबसूरत जंगल और झीलें देखीं।
All of them had their hair in matted locks and they wore barks of trees and deerskin. Those greatsouled ones and Kuntī assumed the form of ascetics.
उन सभी के बाल उलझे हुए थे और वे पेड़ों की छाल और मृगचर्म पहने हुए थे। उन महात्माओं तथा कुन्ती ने तपस्वियों का रूप धारण कर लिया।
Sometimes, the mahāratha-s had to hasten, and carried their mother. Sometimes, they proceeded slowly and in the open.
कभी-कभी, महारथियों को जल्दी करनी पड़ती थी, और अपनी माँ को ले जाना पड़ता था। कभी-कभी, वे धीरे-धीरे और खुले में आगे बढ़ते थे।
They studied about the brāhman in the Veda-s and all the Vedāṅga-s and nītiśāstra. At that time, those wise ones met their grandfather.

Having respectfully saluted Kṛṣṇā Dvaipāyana, those scorchers of enemies and their mother stood before him with joined palms.

Vyāsa said: "O bulls of the Bhārata lineage! I had known in advance how Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons would not follow the righteous path and would unjustly banish you.
व्यास ने कहा: "हे भरत वंश के बैल! मुझे पहले से पता था कि कैसे धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र धर्म मार्ग पर नहीं चलेंगे और अन्यायपूर्वक तुम्हें निर्वासित कर देंगे।
Having known this, I have now come for your welfare. It is not right to sorrow. Know that this will bring future happiness.
यह जानकर अब मैं तुम्हारे कल्याण के लिये आया हूँ। दुःख देना उचित नहीं है. जान लें कि इससे भविष्य में खुशियां मिलेंगी।
There is no doubt that you and they are equal in my eyes. But men love more those who suffer from ill fortune or are young.
इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि तुम और वे मेरी दृष्टि में समान हैं। लेकिन पुरुष उन लोगों को अधिक पसंद करते हैं जो दुर्भाग्य से पीड़ित हैं या युवा हैं।
Therefore, my love for you is now greater. As a result of that love, I wish to do something good for you. Listen to me.
इसलिए, तुम्हारे प्रति मेरा प्रेम अब और अधिक बढ़ गया है। उस प्यार के फलस्वरूप मैं तुम्हारे लिए कुछ अच्छा करना चाहता हूँ। मेरी बात सुनो।
Not far from here, there is a beautiful town that is a safe place for you. Go and live there in disguise and wait for my return."
यहां से कुछ ही दूरी पर एक खूबसूरत शहर है जो आपके लिए सुरक्षित जगह है। जाओ और भेष बदलकर वहीं रहो और मेरे लौटने की प्रतीक्षा करो।”
Vaiśampāyana said: After he had thus comforted the Pārtha-s, the conquerors of enemies Vyāsa led them to Ekacakrā.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इस प्रकार पार्थ-वंश को सांत्वना देने के बाद, शत्रुओं पर विजय प्राप्त करने वाले व्यास उन्हें एकचक्रा ले आये।
The lord also comforted Kuntī. "O daughter! Live. Your son Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of dharma, will rule righteously over all the kings on earth.
भगवान ने कुंती को भी सांत्वना दी। "हे पुत्री! जीवित रहो। तुम्हारा पुत्र धर्मपुत्र युधिष्ठिर पृथ्वी पर सभी राजाओं पर धर्मपूर्वक शासन करेगा।"
Well versed in righteousness, he will conquer the earth through his virtue, aided by the might of Bhīmā and Arjuna. There is no doubt that he will rule.
धर्म में पारंगत, वह भीम और अर्जुन की शक्ति की सहायता से, अपने गुणों के माध्यम से पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त करेगा। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि वह शासन करेंगे.
Your sons and those of Mādrī, all mahāratha-s, will enjoy themselves happily in their own kingdom.
आपके और माद्री के पुत्र, सभी महारथी, अपने राज्य में सुखपूर्वक आनंद लेंगे।
Conquering the entire earth, those tigers among men will perform rājasūya, aśvamedha and other sacrifices, in which the alms given will be very large.
सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी को जीतकर वे मनुष्यराज राजसूय, अश्वमेध तथा अन्य यज्ञ करेंगे, जिनमें दी जाने वाली भिक्षा बहुत बड़ी होगी।
They will rule over the kingdom of their father and grandfathers and ensure their friends and relatives enjoy pleasures and prosperity."
वे अपने पिता और दादाओं के राज्य पर शासन करेंगे और यह सुनिश्चित करेंगे कि उनके मित्र और रिश्तेदार सुख और समृद्धि का आनंद लें।"
Having said this, riṣi Dvaipāyana took them to the house of a Brāhmaṇa and told the best of the Pārtha-s,
इतना कहकर ऋषि द्वैपायन उन्हें एक ब्राह्मण के घर ले गए और पार्थ-स के बारे में सबसे अच्छा बताया,
"Wait for me. I will return for you. You will find great happiness if you learn to adjust to time and place."
"मेरी प्रतीक्षा करो। मैं तुम्हारे लिए वापस आऊंगा। यदि तुम समय और स्थान के साथ तालमेल बिठाना सीख जाओगे तो तुम्हें बहुत खुशी मिलेगी।"
O ruler of men! With joined hands, they said, "So it shall be." Lord Vyāsa, the fortunate riṣi, then went away where he wanted to.
हे मनुष्यों के शासक! उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर कहा, "ऐसा ही होगा।" भाग्यशाली ऋषि भगवान व्यास फिर जहाँ जाना चाहते थे चले गये।
